Anaphylaxis


What is anaphylaxis ❓ 

An extreme form of allergic reaction that typically occurs suddenly/ without warning ❗ 

Causes swelling of the lips, tongue, and breathing difficulties 👅

A medical emergency as it can be fatal 💀 

 

What are the symptoms of anaphylaxis ❓ 

Wheezing and difficulty breathing 

Angio-oedema: swelling of the lips, tongue and throat 👅

An itchy rash (sometimes) 

Loss of consciousness  

 

How do you diagnose anaphylaxis ❓ 

Having classical symptoms 

Physical examination 

 

How do you treat anaphylaxis ❓ 

First aid 

Adrenaline (epinephrine) pen injection 💉

CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) if the person is unresponsive and not breathing 

Hospital admission (if breathing difficulties) 🏨

Adrenaline and antihistamine injections 💉

Remove the trigger (if possible) 

 

Why should I worry about anaphylaxis ❓ 

It can be life threatening/ fatal 💀
