Anaemia (B12 & Folate deficiency)
What is Anaemia (B12 & Folate deficiency) β
Deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate π
Patients have abnormally large and defective red blood cells
Causes: pernicious anaemia (autoimmune disease resulting in less B12 absorbed), inadequate diet, drugs or other conditions (e.g. Crohnβs disease, liver disease) π€
What are the Symptoms of Anaemia β
Headache
Weakness/lethargy π
Indigestion/low appetite
Bad breath π¨
Rapid and shallow breathing
Cognitive/visual changes π
How do you Diagnose Anaemia β
Patient history assessment π
General examination
Blood tests (blood count, folate levels) π
Liver & thyroid function blood test
How do you Treat Anaemia β
Dietary advice (e.g. foods with good source or B12 or folate) π₯
Vitamin B12 or folate supplements
Medication to improve absorption (hydroxocobalamin) π
Monitoring of treatment π
Why should I Worry about Anaemia β
Severe cases can increase risk of heart failure π
Can lead to complications (e.g. numbness, memory lapses)
Can cause sterility and/or pregnancy complications π€°
