Cholesteatoma


What is Cholesteatoma 

 A lump/cyst deep in the ear, on top of the eardrum 👂

 Due to an abnormal collection of trapped skin cells (keratin)

 Causes: chronic ear infection or birth defect 👶

 

What are the Symptoms of Cholesteatoma 

 Ear discharge (can be watery, green/yellow with foul odour) 💧

 Hearing loss/problems 

 Dizziness 😵

 Possible infection

 

How do you Diagnose Cholesteatoma 

 General examination 🔍

 Referral to an ear specialist 

 CT or MRI scan of ear 🏥

 

How do you Treat Cholesteatoma 

 Antibiotic ear drops (to treat discharge) 💊

 Surgery (to remove the lump)

 Regular ear cleaning

 

Why should I Worry about Cholesteatoma 

 Could spread and damage close structures if left untreated

 Can cause serious infection 🤒

 Complications (e.g. vertigo, facial nerve paralysis, meningitis)

 May reoccur 🏥
