Epistaxis (Nosebleeds)


What is Epistaxis (Nosebleeds

 Bleeding from the nose, usually harmless 👃

 Due to damage to the fragile blood vessels inside the nose

 Causes: trauma, inflammation, medication/drugs, the environment, some medical conditions (e.g. haemophilia, hypertension) 🤒

 

What are the Symptoms of Epistaxis 

 Bleeding from one nostril (or both)

 Feeling faint/tired  💤

 Feeling sweaty 💧

 Paleness of skin

 

How do you Diagnose Epistaxis 

 Patient symptoms

 General examination 🔍

 Possibly a blood test (for blood count/clotting)

 

How do you Treat Epistaxis 

 First aid measures (e.g. apply pressure, packing)

 If severe (heavy/prolonged) arrange hospital admission 🏥

 Nasal cautery (medical use of heat to seal wound in nose)

 Treatment (e.g. antiseptic cream) 💊

 Referral to specialist (if at risk)

 

Why should I Worry about Epistaxis 

 Recurrent nosebleeds may suggest underlying cause

 A posterior bleed may need urgent attention (severe, both nostrils) 🚑
