What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (Prevention for Travellers) ❓
A blood clot in deep veins (usually in the legs) 🦵
Partially/completely blocks blood flow
Caused by prolonged immobility when travelling long distances ✈️
Risk factors: obesity, being over 60, extremes in height, family history of blood clots/clotting, pregnancy, surgery or disease such as cancer
What are the Symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis ❓
Pain/swelling/tenderness in one leg
Skin changes (e.g. redness/warmth) 🔴
Swollen veins
How do you Diagnose Deep Vein Thrombosis ❓
Examination of the leg 🔍
Scan of the leg (ultrasound)
Blood test (to check for clots) 💉
How do you Treat Deep Vein Thrombosis ❓
Blood thinning medication 💊
Compression stockings when travelling
Postpone travel if possible 🚫
Reduce immobility e.g. take breaks
Why should I Worry about Deep Vein Thrombosis ❓
The risk increases the longer a person is immobile for 📈
Increased risk of serious complications:
1) The clot may enter the lungs (pulmonary embolism)
2) Excess pressure building in the veins
3) Bleeding episodes (due to medication) 💦
