Chilblains


What are chilblains 

 Small, itchy, painful lumps on the skin as an abnormal response to the cold ❄ 

 Usually last for 2-3 weeks/ longer if exposure to cold is prolonged ❄ 

 Increased risk if: poor circulation, smoking, diabetes, underweight ⬆ 


What are the symptoms of chilblains 

 Small, itchy, painful, red/purple swellings on the skin  

 Commonest locations: fingers, toes, and earlobes 

 Occur several hours after being exposed to cold  


How do you diagnose chilblains 

 Having classical symptoms 

 Examination of the affected areas 


How do you treat chilblains 

 Usually resolve on their own after 2-3 weeks  

 Keep affected areas warm 

 Stop smoking 


Why should I worry about chilblains 

 Infection of the skin (if scratched) 

 Scarring (if scratched)
